Mock Draft 3.0: A Highlight Video Breakdown Rounds 1-4

With the draft looming just 4 days away here is a mock draft of prospects the Jets may select.  Along with each pick a highlight video accompanying each draftee is present.  May 8th cannot come soon enough for us, the fans.

Round 1 - Eric Ebron (TE - North Carolina)

Round 2 - Allen Robinson (WR - Penn State)

Round 3 - Pierre Desir (CB - Lindenwood)

Round 4 -                  Lamarcus Joyner (CB - Florida State)

Josh Huff (WR - Oregon)

Ed Reynolds (FS - Stanford)

Vick Decides To Go #1

Jets newly acquired quarterback Michael Vick decided he will wear number 1 next season with the team.  Originally, Vick stated he would wear number 8 but decided to change his mind.  Previously punter Ryan Quigley wore number 1, but will change his number for Vick.  Vick tweeted, "After trying on the #8 I decided that it's not the right fit for me. I'll be going with the #1 officially. Thank You #JetsNation". Of course, Vick's first choice of numbers would be number 7 which his new teammate and competition QB Geno Smith currently owns.

2014 Jets' Regular Season Schedule Breakdown

The 2014 NFL regular season schedule has finally been released.  I see the Jets finishing with a 10-6 record and a wildcard birth if the chips fall right.  Here is my week to week breakdown, as well as predicted scores, for the Jets' 2014 regular season:
Week 1 - Oakland (Home)
Geno Smith gets the week 1 start for the green and white and leads the team to a close 24-23 victory.  Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory rush for 40 combined carries and 150 yards, also punching in 2 scores on the ground.  The defense holds on the final possession of the game.

Week 2 - Green Bay (Away)
Newly acquired Julius Peppers and premiere edge rusher Clay Matthews get to the quarterback in this one, sacking Geno Smith a total of 5 times.  Geno is also strip sacked for a scoop and score touchdown and throws a late pick to seal the deal.  Packers win 31-17.

Week 3 - Chicago (Home)
The Jets are primed to rebound on monday night following a weak showing against the Packers.  The Jets' play tough allowing Bears running back Matt Forte only 80 yards rushing on the day.  It doesn't matter however as Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey torch the Jets weak secondary for 250 yards receiving combined and 4 touchdown receptions.  Geno plays better but it's not enough.  Bears win
35 - 27.

Week 4 - Detroit (Home)
For the third week in a row the Jets face off against an NFC North foe.  Despite a huge game from Calvin Johsnon, the Jets find a way to win in this matchup.  Geno Smith rushes for 2 scores and throws for 1 more.  The Chris and Chris running back tandem for the Jets' continues to effectively carry a large role, as the Jets attempt only 17 pass attempts against a daunting Lions front line.  The Jets go turnover free for the first time all season and sneak out a close 23 - 17 victory.

Week 5 - San Diego (Away)
A crucial game for the green and white before they play Denver and New England back to back.  The Jets understand the importance of this game and go out and take care of business, adding to the notion that the team always plays well against the Chargers.  Milliner does a nice job against Keenan Allen, holding him to less than 80 yards receiving.  Milliner also adds his first interception of the 2014 campaign.  The Jets run the ball down the Chargers throat for a 31 - 13 slaughter.

Week 6 - Denver (Home)
The defending AFC Champions come into town.  Peyton throws an early interception to Dee Milliner but the Broncos rebound quickly.  Ware and Miller wear down the Jets offensive line all game, as the Broncos finish with 6 sacks on the day.  Peyton quickly forgets his early turnover and throws for over 400 yards and 4 touchdown passes.  Former Bronco and newly aqcuired Jets receiver Eric Decker is quite on the day only catching 2 passes for a measly 14 yards.  Broncos triumph 38 - 10.

Week 7 - New England (Away)
Coming off a beating from the Broncos, this short week matchup against the Patriots wont be any kinder to the Jets.  New England is firing on all cylinders from the get go.  The Jets look flat and lethargic from the get go, and Bellichek's squad takes advantage.  Interceptions from Revis and McCourty cap a great day for New England.  Geno struggles again and the "boo birds" are out.  Speculation of Mike Vick getting the start against Buffalo begin to louden.  Pats win 27 - 16, after the Jets score a meaningless touchdown with 30 seconds remaining.

Week 8 - Buffalo (Home)
A well rested Jets squad really rebounds nicely.  Geno gets the nod at quarterback and proves the decision to be right.  He throws for over 300 yards for the first time all season as the Jets win a close one over the Bills.  Eric Decker explodes for the first time as a Jet for a 125 yard, 2 touchdown game.
The Bills begin to rally at the end but a clutch sack from Wilkerson seals the deal late in the 4th quarter.  Jets win 20 - 13.

Week 9 - Kansas City (Away)
KC continues to struggle on the season proving last season to be a fluke.  Dwayne Bowe struggles to get open against Milliner and the "Sons of Anarchy" stifle Jamaal Charles all day long.  The Jets offense is slow off the gate but a 80 yard touchdown scamper from Chris Johnson lights the fire for the Jets.  The Jets play stellar defense and pound the rock to a 17 - 7 hard fought victory.

Week 10 - Pittsburgh (Home)
Pittsburgh and the Jets square off in a huge game with large wild card implications on the line.  In an old style brusining game both teams rush for over 150 yards on 40 plus rushing attempts each.  The quarterbacks are quiet until Ben Roethlisberger hits Antonio Brown for a first down on a 4th down conversion on the final drive of the game.  The Steelers kick a 38 yard field goal as time expires for a 17 - 16 victory over the Jets.

Week 11 - Bye

Week 12 - Buffalo (Away)
On a snowy, cold late November day the 2 teams face off in a turnover fest for the ages.  The teams combine for 5 turnovers and only 430 yards of combined offense.  Neither team can get going as the score is tied at 13 midway through the 4th quarter.  Jets newly signed kick returner Jacoby Ford houses a kickoff for a 99 yard return.  The return is the final score of the game and the Jets win 20 - 13.

Week 13 - Miami (Home)
This Monday night showdown against the Phins will be one for the record books.  Both teams look incredible playing hard nosed good quality offensive and defensive football.  Ryan Tannehill breaks through a late would be sack from Sheldon Richardson and finds Lamar Miller who somehow finds the endzone.  Mike Wallace goes for 100 yards and 2 scores in the game.  Phins 31 - 23 over the Jets.

Week 14 - Minnesota (Away)
The metrodome is gone and the weather is cold.  Real cold.  Sub zero temperatures stifle the passing game.  Somehow the Jets manage to contain AP to 115 yards on 33 carries.  Ivory carries the ball for 22 times and 2 scores from within 5 yards.  The Jets win 23 - 20.

Week 15 - Tennesee (Away)
Chris Johnson tears it up in his return to the Music City.  Johnson turns back the clock to 2009 on his way to 210 yards rushing and 3 scores on the day.  His remarkable performance earns him the AFC Ground Player of the week award and earns his team a blowout victory.  Jets take down the Titans 28 - 12.

Week 16 - New England (Home)
Eric Decker and Co. play much better this time around against New England.  Revis makes no plays and is held quite against his old home crowd at MetLife Stadium.  Decker catches a touchdown pass and Johnson and Ivory go for 180 on the ground.  Brady throws a late touchdown pass but the Jets recover an onside kick for the win.  Jets 27 - 24 over the Pats.

Week 17 - Miami (Away)
After reeling off 3 straight victories to bring them to 9 wins the Jets are on the brink of making the playoffs.  HUGE playoff implications are on the line in this game to add to the atmosphere of a heated divisional rivalry game.  New England already has clinched the divison so both the Phins and Jets are fighting for a playoff birth.  In a desperate battle between the 2 teams the Jets prevail.  In a low scoring slugfest the Jets outrush the Dolphins with clutch performances from Chris Johnson, Chris Ivory, and even Bilal Powell.  The Jets rush the ball 55 attempts on the game and win 17 - 14 to clinch a wildcard spot.

Michael Vick to Wear Number 8

Mike Vick has worn number 7 since high school, in college, and all throughout his NFL career.  That changes now.  The incumbent quaterback, second-year man, Geno Smith currently owns number 7 on the Jets and that will not change.  Mike Vick took to social media to ask fans whether he should wear number 3 or 8.  Vick, with the help of Jets' fans, chose number 8, posting a picture on Instagram (seen below).

"I want to see everybody in there MV8 jerseys this year. I appreciate all the fans that helped. Fresh start..new me! #JetsNation #GangGreen #V8" - Michael Vick's caption on his jersey number Instagram post

Chris Johnson Officially Becomes a Member of the Green and White

Newly Acquired Running Back Chris Johnson
As long anticipated by most of us, former Tennessee Titans' running back, Chris Johnson signed with the New York Jets.  After an incredibly effective career in Tennessee where he was the feature back and work-horse in the team's offense, Johnson now moves onto the next stage of his career with the Jets.  Don't expect the Chris Johnson you saw in 2009 who rushed for over 2,000 yards in a magical season, but don't sell Johnson short.  Although Johnson may be a different player at this stage in his career, he can, and will be extremely successful with the Jets if he accepts his role.

What exactly will be CJ2K's role with the Jets?
Jets' Workhorse Running Back Chris Ivory
Look for Johnson to be a platoon back in the Jets' backfield, along with incumbent starter Chris Ivory.  Ivory, a north-and-south punishing runner, will benefit greatly from a compliment back such a Johnson.  At this point in his career Johnson will benefit greatly from no longer being asked to be an offenses' feature back.  The same for Ivory who has faced many injury issues throughout his career and could use a legitimate compliment back to help take the load off his shoulders.  Expect CJ2K to receive between 15 to 17 carries a game and add a major new dimension to the Jets' passing game out of the backfield.  Let's be honest, the main reason Johnson was brought to New York was to add a legitimate home run threat to the offense, which the team has lacked greatly for many years now.  Johnson is behind only Minnesota Viking's running back Adrian Peterson in runs of 20 yards or more since Johnson entered the league.  Adding a home run threat like Johnson should add much improvement in the passing game by forcing opposing defenses to bring an 8th man into the box, most likely a safety.  This opens up more room for the receivers to run, get open, and create big plays against an under-manned secondary.

Health Concerns?
Many critiques have expressed "some concern" in Chris Johnson's surgically repaired knee.  Reports have also surfaced of Johnson having arthritis in his knee.  Although he denies the claim it is still something to keep in the back of your mind as the offseason and regular season begins.  Johnson tore his meniscus in the third week of the season, and he pointed to the injury as the main contributing factor to his declining production in his final season with Tennessee.  Johnson was quoted as saying, "If the Jets had any concerns, pretty sure I wouldn't have passed the physical."

3 Jets Bound to Make a Huge Improvement in 2014

As we all know the Jets have made their fair share of poor draft picks in the past.  From passing up on Marino, to drafting Vernon Gholston, the list could go on forever.  However, these 3 players currently on the Jets roster are primed to step up in 2014:

CB - Dee Milliner
As a rookie last season, Dee Milliner struggled his fair share throughout the 2013 Jets' campaign.  However, Milliner stepped it up big time for the green and white in the final month of the season, especially the final 2 weeks of the regular season.  Milliner was asked to cover Josh Gordon and Mike Wallace over the final 2 games and he did so exceptionally well.  Gordon and Wallace are 2 of the premiere deep threats the NFL possesses today and Milliner was nothing short of incredible against them.  He broke up 10 passes over the 2 day span, almost unheard of at the cornerback position, and played like a veteran.  Milliner will surely be asked to play a huge role in the Jets' defense void of cornerback talent next season.  With the physicality, speed, and raw athleticism Milliner possesses, watch out for the youngster to make huge contributions to the team come September.

QB - Geno Smith
Geno Smith's rookie season was a roller coaster to say the least.  One week the youngster would play well and other weeks he would single handedly lose the game for his team by forcing passes and not protecting the football.  Smith showed a huge improvement over the final month of the 2013 season.  Like fellow rookie Dee Milliner, Geno was a huge reason for his team's success over the final month of the regular season.  Smith has all the physical skills to play at a high-level in the NFL but some question his mental toughness and ability to dissect defenses at the NFL level.  If Smith can learn to protect the football and build on the end of his rookie campaign, the youngster can be the answer to the Jets recent quarterback woes of the last few seasons.  It is also worth noting that veteran quaterback Michael Vick was brought in to push Geno and give the Jets a legitimate option at the position if Geno does fail.  I believe Vick will help mentor Geno and Vick's presence will aslo help to push the young quarterback to a new level of success.

WR - Stephen Hill
The New York Jets' franchise is all too familiar with the term "draft bust".  This may be wide receiver Stephen Hill's last chance to prove he isn't one.  Hill is entering his third season in the NFL, all with the Jets.  Hill has done almost nothing since entering the league, other than constantly acquiring nagging injuries, and dropping huge passes at crucial points in ballgames.  This season could be the turning point in Hill's career where he goes from bust to boom.  As silly as it sounds on the surface, if you look deeper into it Hill really could begin to thrive this season.  Assuming Hill stays healthy he will have weapons around him for the first time in his career.  Newly acquired Eric Decker and the addition of a high-end receiver via May's draft will help further the development of Hill.  Hill will not be asked to be a number one receiver and can take time to learn the position and focus on growing as a player.  Hill possesses all the physical tools, strength, speed, and athleticism to contribute at the NFL level.  His focus however does come into question at times, as at parts of ballgames he looks to have stones attached to his wrists rather than hands.  With some veteran tutelage, more comfort in the offense, surrounding playmakers, and 2 legitimate options at quaterback, look for Hill to make a significant jump in productiveness this season.

Mock Draft 2.0: Rounds 1-3

In February I created a mock draft for the New York Jets.  Since then, much has changed with projected draft boards as prospects have fell and increased in value.  Free agency has also started which heavily influences the way teams will pick come draft day.  In my previous draft I had the Jets' selecting tight end Eric Ebron with their 18th overall pick but now he seems to be a much higher sought after prospect.  It is also important to remember that the Jets lost a third round choice which now becomes a fourth rounder, do to Darrelle Revis being released from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  The Jets possess the ability to build heavily through the draft with the team featuring 12 selections in May's upcoming draft.  The team has a first, second, and third round choice, as well as 3 fourth rounders, a fifth, 4 sixth rounders, and a seventh rounder in the draft.  Many of these picks were rewarded to the team as compensation.  Here is my take on who the Jets should select in the draft:

Round 1 (18th Overall):
CB - Darqueze Dennard (Michigan St.)

It is no secret that the Jets are in desperate need at the cornerback position entering the 2014 NFL Draft.  Cornerback is the most important position in coach Rex Ryan's coveted defensive schemes.  After signing Eric Decker in free agency, the Jets need at the receiver position can wait until the second round to be addressed.  Dennard possesses the talent to step in and start for the Jets from day one.  He has outstanding size (5'11", 200 pounds) and a thick, muscular frame.  Dennard excels in press coverage which makes him a perfect fit for coach Ryan.  He is competitive, likeable, and a strong leader.  Although he has been injury prone at times in his career, the Jets should take a risk on his durability and draft Dennard at the 18 spot come May.

Round 2 (49th Overall):
TE - Jace Amaro (Texas Tech)

The only legitimate tight end currently on the Jets' roster is Jeff Cumberland.  Although a viable option at tight end, Cumberland is not an imposing force or a man that opposing offenses fear.  Drafting Jace Amaro would add much needed depth to the tight end position, as well as the possibility of great upside in Amaro.  Amaro is simply a beast.  Weighing in at 265 pounds and towering 6' 5", Amaro is a physical specimen.  Amaro moves like a receiver and runs crisp, smooth routes.  He has good hands and fairly impressive speed.  He can stretch the field and his sure hands force defenses to fear his abilities as a receiving option.  Amaro is not a good blocker and tends to get thrown around by big defensive ends.  This could be a huge problem and leaves many weary of his ability.  All that aside, Amaro is a calculated risk that should pay off should the Jets give him a chance come draft day.

Round 3 (80th Overall):
WR - Jordan Matthews (Vanderbilt)

After acquiring Eric Decker via free agency this offseason, the Jets began to solidify their receiving corps.  Last season the Jets' receivers were abysmal at best.  This is a position of high need and priority for the team.  The fan base wants to see an improved offense, and quite frankly the jets MUST improve in this area as well.  If available, Jordan Matthews is a must take player with the 80th overall selection in the draft.  Matthews has good length at 6' 3" but is a little on the thin side, only weighing in at 213 pounds.  He runs good routes and will be a great red zone threat for quarterback's Geno Smith and Michael Vick to throw to.  Matthews possesses good awareness, gives effort on his blocks (although often unsuccesful), and has soft hands.  He is prone to concentration drops and can be a "diva" sometimes.  There aren't much questions about his ability to play the position.  If he can get his head straight he should be a solid starter at the NFL level.  Matthews good speed will allow him to also compete as a punt returner for the team.  As long as Matthews uses his intelligence and remains a gritty player, the Jets will be happy they selected him.

Is CJ2K ready to bolt to New York?

The Jets are loaded up on cap space and primed to make a big free agent signing if they wish.  Throughout free agency to this point,  Idzik has been deliberate and slow-moving to be polite.  Many people have been critical of his approach to thus point and a possible signing of Chris Johnson could help turn around his image to the Jets' fan base.  Currently Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory are the feature backs in offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's offense.  Both backs are north-and-south runners that run hard through the middle, but lack the explosiveness to rattle off big plays in the rushing game.  A player of Chris Johnson's skill set can be a perfect fit with the Jets' offense.

Jets' fans are all too familiar with running back Chris Johnson's home run ability

Yes, it is true that Chris Johnson has slowed down substantially since posting his 2,000 plus yard rushing season in 2009.  Since his breakout campaign in 2009, Johnson has posted 4 consecutive seasons of 1,000 plus rushing yards.  In fact, in his career Johnson has never produced anything less than 1,047 yards on the ground.  This shows steady production from the speedster.  A major concern for Johnson however, is his timidness while running the football and his failure to find holes at times. Part of this can be contributed to a poor offensive line in Tennessee, mixed with a combination of Johnson trying to always hit the home run ball rather than settling for singles.  Durability is a plus with Johnson, as he has played in all 16 games every season , with the exception of his rookie season in which he played in 15 contests.  Johnson has slowed down ever so slightly but still possesses unheralded speed and jaw-dropping lateral quickness.  A player with a skill set like Johnson has will immediately take the Jets' rushing attack to another dimension.  Johnson is also a good receiver out of the backfield which the Jets certainly lack with their current roster at running back.  The versatility Johnson offers makes him a perfect fit for the Jets at the right price.  The "right price" however may be hard to obtain with a GM like Idzik who always seems to be bargain shopping in free agency.

Chris Johnson's Career Rushing/Receiving Statistics

Will Johnson be released by the Titans?  Johnson may or may not be released but sources say he will not be a member of the Titans by the start of OTA's next week, meaning he will be traded or released.  After losing Donald Brown to the Chargers in free agency, the Jets were making a strong stealthy pursuit of Brown, and MJD recently singing with Oakland, the Jets are in serious need of bolstering their backfield.  Assuming Johnson is released, why would he not end up like the other free agents the Jets have unsuccessfully recruited.  With a stingy GM not likely to shell out the kind of money Johnson is looking for and Johnson likely not wanting to be part of a 2 or 3 man rotation at running back, do not expect him to sign with the Jets.  The Jets will likely continue on the "Idzik-ian" approach and draft running backs in the later rounds of free agency.  As unexciting as they may be to some fans, the Jets are loaded with picks come May and are primed to have a stellar draft.

UPDATE: D-Jax

ex-Eagles' Wide Receiver DeSean Jackson

DeSean Jackson's rocky road in Philadelphia finally came to an end.  After spending his first 6 seasons in the NFL with the Eagles, the organization decided to part ways with their franchise receiver.  The release of Jackson did not come as a surprise to people monitoring his situation in Philly and there were valid reasons for the release.  First off Jackson did not "buy in" to head coach Chip Kelly's scheme.  Coach Kelly and his staff were anything but happy with Jackson, as the star receiver would routinely miss meetings and spar with the coaching staff.  Jackson was also due $10.5 million dollars this season and refused to restructure his contract after being asked by the Eagle's organization.

All of this aside, the most important reason for Jackson's release was his off-the-field concerns.  Jackson was rumored to be involved with gang-members, as well as having several gang-affiliated members in his friend circle.  The Eagle's decided that they did not want DeSean on the team anymore, but were in a tough situation.  If they decided to trade Jackson to another team and his off-the-field concerns came to a head with his new team, the Eagles would be responsible for trading him.  Because of this, the Eagle's decided to release Jackson instead of moving him to another squad in exchange for draft picks.  The fact that the Eagle's released DeSean shows that their concerns for Jackson span way beyond anything the public originally knew.  This article from NJ.com explains the Jackson situation in a new light.

The bottom line is, should the Jets take a chance on Jackson and sign him via free agency?  As stated in my last article, I gave many reasons as to why the team should sign Jackson.  Of course, none of his physically prowess and elite skills have declined since my earlier post arose.  But what has arose since then is the news of DeSean's possible involvement in gang activity.  If it were me calling the shots for the Jets, I would go ahead and take my chances by signing Jackson.  His impact on-the-field is way to great to pass up for the Jets.  Jackson would immediately make an impact, possibly turning the Jets dismal offense into one of the top-10 threats in the league.

John Idzik's opinion on Jackson however seems to be polar opposite of mine and the majority of the fan bases.  Idzik has moved extremely slow and deliberate to this point in free agency and don't expect him to be any different with DeSean.  Idzik is not sold on the idea of bringing Jackson and all his baggage into the organization.  To this point in the Jackson sweepstakes, the Jets have not even made a play on the the receiver.  Nine teams have contacted the embattled Jackson and two are said to be in "serious" negotiations at this point.  Of course anything can happen and we will see how things unfold, but to expect DeSean Jackson in green and white would be nothing short of wishful thinking at this point in time.

DeSean Jackson to the Jets?

First off, to answer the question that everyone is asking, is it realistic wide receiver DeSean Jackson could become a Jet?   Yes, it is realistic DeSean Jackson could become a New York Jet.  Yes, Jets' owner Woody Johnson is a fan of Jackson and would like to see him in green and white.  However, that being said it is unlikely the Jets will give up the asking price the Eagles are seeking in a trade for the dynamic wide receiver.  It is much more likely that, assuming DeSean is released from the Eagles, he signs with the Jets as a free agent.  When asked about Jackson, Jets' owner Woody Johnson had this to say, "We're looking at a number of players, including DeSean," Johnson said. "He's a very good player. We're looking at a number of them. Trade's not our primary operating motif right now. We're trying to build through the draft. Building through the draft is something that is the way to build a successful team long-term."  Woody could not have been more clear on basically saying "we don't want to trade for the guy, but if and when he's a free agent we will not be afraid to make a move on him."

"We're always interested in talent.  If it's somebody that fits into our locker room and understands that he can fit into our culture at a price we can afford, that we feel is appropriate, then we'd do it." - Jets' Owner Woody Johnson on DeSean Jackson

The Jets have plenty of cap space to make the move happen and are in desperate need of a move that gets the fan base excited after losing out on so many free agents this offseason.  Johnson also recently has made it clear he is tired of being "patient" for a winner and wants to win now.  An omen that may not bid well for head coach Rex Ryan, but that is neither here nor there.  If GM John Idzik is able to bring in Jackson the fans must tip their cap to him.  Jackson has been one of the league's best receivers since entering the league in 2008.  For his career he has caught 356 passes for 6,117 yards and 32 touchdowns.  He also offers diversity in the running game and spreads the field like few others at the NFL level.  Also, not to overlook is his impact on special teams where the Jets also struggled last season.  DeSean would definitely offer a spark for the Jets in multiple facets of the game.  If Jackson is obtained, in one season Idzik would have completely turned around the team's weak receiving corps into possibly the strength of the offense.  A receiving tandem of DeSean Jackson and newly acquired Eric Decker would bode very well for the Jets for years to come.

DeSean Jackson's Career Numbers

Fear over Jackson is not that he cannot play, because he can and he has proved it year after year.  There are durability issues with Jackson, as he tends to get injured quite frequently.  There are also issues over his character on and off the field.  Jackson is also known to be like a "Darrelle Revis" type player, in the sense that he is a "mercenary" of some sorts, playing to make the most amount of money he can with little loyalty to his team.  A player like that should make the Jets weary, especially after dealing with Revis for years, but talent like Jackson possesses does not hit the open market often.  Will the Jets make a play for the talented receiver or let him pass?  Only time will tell, but I can guarantee this will not be the last time fans of gang green will hear of DeSean Jackson.

Goodbye Sanchez, Hello Vick

Once again the Jets made headlines in the media for their recent decision to cut former 5th overall pick, quarterback, Mark Sanchez and sign free agent Mike Vick to replace his spot on the roster. New York is known for their brash decisions at the quarterback position since they traded up to draft Sanchez in 2009 and brought Tim Tebow onboard in 2011, in what turned out to be a disaster for the team. Although the recent past has been rocky for the team, bringing in a veteran quarterback, in Vick, with real skill to start in the NFL is a major thumbs up for the Jets. After a rookie campaign in which he struggled mightily, Jets' QB Geno Smith still has a lot to prove. The Jets do remain confident in Geno and hope he can eventually become a reliable starter for the team for years to come. However, Mike Vick adds much needed insurance to the position and will surely compete for the starting job.

Geno Smith's 2013 Numbers
Here is how the New York Jets would like the 2014 season to pan out.  Geno Smith, under the tutelage of backup Mike Vick, grows into a viable option at quarterback next season showing much improvement.  Geno starts week 1 and finishes the season as the starter.  Vick happily accepts his role as a backup and pushes Geno to the "next level".  The Jets make the playoffs and ride off into the sunset.  That is all well and good but the reality of next season for the Jets may very well be strikingly different from what the team envisions.

Vick and Smith will both receive a fair shot at obtaining the number 1 spot at quarterback for the New York Jets.  If Vick wins the job chances are Geno will still be needed, as an aging Vick never known for his durability, will either likely get injured allowing Smith to start or be replaced due to ineffectiveness.  The same holds true for Smith, as if he wins the starting job it is very likely Vick will be needed at some point to step in for the younger either due to poor play or injury.

There is little need to worry Jets' fans for a "Tebow-like" repeat situation, as Geno and Vick have clearly had their roles laid out for them and seem to embrace them with open arms.  Smith was even quoted after the signing of Vick as saying, "Awesome, man. Vick's my guy.  We needed to find a guy that was legitimately a guy that could come in and play. I think that's what we did.  Mission Accomplished."  Geno seems to be in good spirits, as does Vick with these comments he made after signing with the team, "I know what I came to New York to do. First and foremost, I came to compete and be there for Geno. I know he has a long way to go, but we both talked and we both agree we're going to push one another and make each other better."  All comments from both players are very good signs to thus point and seem to show a friendship forming between the veteran and youngster.  Let us hope that come December, these two players remain friends and not enemies.

"I know what I came to New York to do. First and foremost, I came to compete and be there for Geno." - QB Mike Vick's comments on the starting job for the Jets

2014 Draft Poll

Who do you want the Jets to draft in the 1st round? (Assuming they select at 18th overall)

pollcode.com free polls

Why Calvin Pace Was a Great Re-Signing

After going out and signing Eric Decker to be a key pass catcher and Breno Giacomini to replace Autin Howard's services at offensive tackle the Jets were still inept at pass rusher.  Coming off a career high 10 sack season, Calvin Pace was a great re-signing for the Jets.  Although 33 years old and toward the end of his career, Pace will provide leadership and tutelage for the youngsters on the roster.  Pace will also offer viable services as a pass rusher to hold the team over until a replacement is ready.
Assuming the Jets take a pass rusher in the upcoming draft, Pace will only have to play a limited role for the next 2 season at most.  Jets' GM John Idzik not know for brining on older veteran players made an exception with Pace.  For a 2 year deal worth 5 million dollars, brining back Calvin and his services was a much needed wise move for gang green.

Rodgers-Cromartie and the Jets Cornerback Crisis

New York Jets' head coach Rex Ryan's frustration level is at an all time high, and rightly so.  Coach Ryan's defense relies heavily on elite cornerback play in order for the proper execution of his blitz schemes.  As of now the roster at cornerback for the Jets features second year player Dee Milliner, former first round bust Kyle Wilson, and anything but spectacular Darrin Walls and Johnny Patrick.  This comes after the Jets showed no interest in signing Darrelle Revis, other then Rex, and cut their best corner in Antonio Cromartie due to cap reasons.  The culmination of events that have led the Jets to be baron at cornerback must be rectified, and rectified quickly.  There is still hope of landing an elite-ish cornerback to bolster the Jets secondary and keep Rex from having a heart attack.

That hope lies in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the cousin of ex-Jet corner Antonio Cromartie.  Rodgers-Cromartie is coming off an excellent season with the Denver Broncos but many wonder about his head.  DRC has always possessed the physical skills to be a top tier corner in the league but what's between his shoulders has been the issue.  He is known to take plays off and sometimes go as far as being the best and worst player on the field in the same drive!  Rodgers-Cromartie also struggled mightily in his 2012 campaign, just one year prior to his 2013 stint with the Broncos.  DRC also stated that he would have retired at the end of the 2013 season if the Broncos did in fact win the Super Bowl against the Seahawks.  All of that makes you wonder where his head is or if he's just after the dollars.

The positives are DRC owns good hands and his ball skills are no mistake, as he will make plays in the secondary.  His pure physical skills are enough for the Jets to take a chance on this guy.  With no other number 1 corners in the defense, you know Rex is lobbying for Idzik and the gang to go out and pay Rodgers-Cromartie.  Only time will tell whether he is signed or not, as many believe it is a bidding war between the Jets and their cross town rival Giants for his services.  One thing is for certain, Rex wants DRC in green and white and that's a fact.

Other cornerback options are Carlos Rodgers (cut by San Francisco) and Dimitri Patterson (cut by Miami).

2014 Free Agency: Days 1-4

Many, including myself, believe this offseason has been one of the craziest beginnings to the free agent signing period we have ever seen.  Numerous big-name players were either cut by their teams or could not come to agreeable new deals, including ex-Cowboy star DeMarcus Ware and one-and-done Darrelle Revis from Tampa Bay.  We saw Denver and New England decide that they were "all in" signing multiple veteran free agents that will benefit greatly short-term.  Denver signed linebacker/defensive end Demarcus Ware, safety TJ Ward, and cornerback Aqib Talib.  New England went out and nabbed elite cornerback Darrelle Revis to replace Talib's services, as well as signing another reliable cornerback in Brandon Browner.  On the surface these signings may "wow" you, especially the signings of Denver, but they doom the team's salary cap situation just a short 2-3 years down the road.  Take a look at the following graphics, as they show just how dominant the contracts of Ware, Ward, and Talib will be against the cap in the near future:

2014

2015

2016

The reason Denver would do this is because they are so close to getting to, and possibly winning a Super Bowl in the next 3 years.  With an aging star at quarterback, in Peyton Manning, loading up in free agency for the short-term gain makes much sense for the team.  The same applies to Tom Brady and his Patriots' squad, as well as other teams that are in "win-now" mode.

However, our beloved Jets are not in this "win-now" mode but rather a "win-soonish" mode to put a humorous spin on it.  One word to signify the Jet's free agency plan would be PATIENCE.  As hard as it is in a media market like New York, fans must remain patient.  New York Jet's General Manager John Idzik has been strict, deliberate, and precise in free agency throughout his first 2 years as the team's GM including this offseason.  This can be exemplified by the team being adamant to not sign Darrelle Revis upon his availability as a free agent, and also letting free agent tackle Austin Howard walk his way to Oakland.  Idzik, known to be a future oriented GM not afraid to make tough decisions, was said to "draw a line in the sand" with regard to Howard's contract.  Personally I am a huge fan of this approach from Idzik and his gang, and am a strong supporter of the "plan" the team's management has for the future.

The Jet's did show however they are willing to spend money going after numerous free agents, eventually signing the top wide receiver on the market in Eric Decker from Denver and Howard's replacement Breno Giacomini from the Super Bowl champion Seahawks.  Decker is a great start to bolster the receiving core and add weapons for quarterback Geno Smith.  Although it is likely the Jets will sign another veteran receiver to compliment Decker, expect them to draft a receiver in the first-round of the draft as well.  Also look for the Jets to try and make a strong push to sign ex-Bronco cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to play aside 2nd year player Dee Milliner.  By not overpaying for free agents and giving "B" players "A" money, the Jets will be primed to make a run in the upcoming seasons as Geno matures and the offense and defense come together.

The Answers You've Been Looking For to the Eric Decker and Michael Vick Questions

Eric Decker, the Jets new #1 Receiving Option?:
Simply put, the Jets must improve at wide receiver this offseason.  Assuming the team selects at least one receiver in May's upcoming draft, it is still highly likely a free agent will also be acquired at the position.  Jeremy Maclin, Philadelphia Eagles, was the guy I really wanted the Jets to go after.  Having familiarity with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's scheme made Maclin an almost instant fit in New York.  Unfortunately Philadelphia also saw the upside in Maclin, recently resigning him to a one-year deal, worth up to $6 million with $3.5 million in guaranteed money.  Free agent wide receiver Eric Decker could be the long-term answer at receiver for the Jets... Or is he?  On the surface what's not to like?  Decker is a big physical receiver, at 6' 3" 215 pounds.  He possesses the strength and hand size to go up and grab jump balls, as well as the speed and crisp route running abilities to be a force on the outside.  Although all of the measures and statistics look good on paper Decker remains a long-shot to be signed by the Jets this offseason.  With an asking price upward of $9 million dollars, his asking price is probably too steep for the Jets.  Many people believe Decker's stats could be severely inflated due to Peyton Manning and his high octane passing offense, making him an even bigger risk at such a high asking price.  The Jets are better off looking at a cheaper option at receiver, as well as building through the draft.

Vick in Green and White?:
Michael Vick, at age 34 in June, should be a no-brainer sign for the New York Jets.  First off, Michael is already familiar with Jet's offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's scheme.  Mornhinweg and Vick also maintain a positive relationship from their time in Philadelphia.  Vick has openly said he is okay with mentoring a young quarterback and playing the backup role for a team if need be.  This is perfect for the Jet's current situation, as Vick would be an ideal mentor for Smith due to their similarities in skill sets.  Vick also is still a viable option as a starter in the league.  If Smith stumbles in his sophomore campaign and proves he is not the guy, the Jets would be able to plug in Vick at quarterback and still give themselves a legitimate chance to win games.  Lastly, Vick isn't commanding a big deal in free agency due to nagging injury problems and the insurgence of young gun QB Nick Foles.  At the absolute minimum Vick serves as a cheap, legitimate NFL quarterback that can push young quarterback Geno Smith in training camp.

UPDATE: Folk Gets Tag, Why Revis Still Matters

Folk "Hero" Receives Tag:
NY Jet's kicker Nick Folk received the team's franchise tag assuring he will officially remain a member of the team next year.  Folk was well deserving of the tag posting a 2013 campaign widely considered as the best season a kicker has ever had for the franchise.  Folk was 33 for 36 on kicks including three game winners in the fourth quarter or overtime.  Although Folk was looking for a long-term contract extension he will have to accept receiving the tag.  He is projected to receive around $3.56 million dollars, although the exact figure has not been released yet.  Keep in mind although Folk was a recipient of the franchise tag, long-term contract talks are still ongoing and a contract could still be signed.

Perhaps no kick was sweeter than this one for the green and white

Why Revis Still Matters:
Jets' fans are forced to hold our breath, once again, over Darrelle Revis.  After much speculation last offseason, Revis was eventually traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a first-round pick (18th overall) and a conditional fourth-round choice that improves to a third-rounder if Revis is on the Bucs' roster for the third day of the 2014 league year (March 13th).  Although the odds are in the Jets' favor that Revis will remain on the Bucs', it is not impossible he could be traded.  Revis is guaranteed no money out of his six year, $96 million dollar contract he signed with the team last year making him moveable.  The asking price would obviously be steep for a player of Revis' caliber, but if he is shipped off to another team the Jets could end up being the biggest losers at the end of the day.

2014 Draft: Rounds 1-3

With the NFL draft right around the corner, the obvious question that looms is who will the Jets select?  There are exactly 73 days until the draft, but who's counting, and I assure you organization's are wasting no time evaluating talent.  As the scouting combine comes to a close, we start to form a better grasp on who will exceed at the next level.  There have been many standouts and many underachievers to thus point.  The Jets own the 18th overall pick in May's draft, as well as a second-rounder and 2 third-round picks in the first 3 rounds alone.  I can almost guarantee that this draft will feature a change in tactics for the Jets.  The last offensive first-round selection for the Jets was Mark Sanchez in 2009, since then the team has selected strictly defensive prospects (Kyle Wilson in 2010, Muhammed Wilkerson in 2011, Quinton Coples in 2012, and Dee Milliner/Sheldon Richardon in 2013).  A lack of drafting early-round offensive talent has largely influenced the Jets offensive demise.  Expect the team to go out this year targeting elite offensive talent early in the draft.  I would like to see the Jets take these prospects come May:

Round 1:
18th Overall - Eric Ebron (TE - UNC)
Although every fan would love to see Mike Evans or Sammy Watkins name called on draft day, it is highly unlikely the wide receivers will still be there for the Jets to take.  After absolutely killing it at the combine, selecting Ebron would be anything but "settling".  Ebron stands at 6'4" and weighs in at 230, giving him okay size to work with at the NFL level, and likely serving as his major flaw heading into draft time.  He also does tend to struggle at times blocking.  What Ebron lacks in size he makes up for in athleticism.  Clocking in at 4.60 seconds on his 40-yard dash and jumping 120 inches on his broad jump proves just how athletic Ebron is.  He possesses the speed and athleticism to become an instant starter for the Jets.  He will add much needed play making ability to a team that lacks play making ability to be polite.

Round 2:
Brandin Cooks (WR - Oregon St.)
Cooks absolutely nailed his combine, widely considered to be one of the most impressive prospects to participate.  Undersized at 5'10" and 190 pounds, Cooks owns the speed to make up for his lack of size and then some running a jaw-dropping 4.33 40-yard dash at the combine!  Durability is not an issue for Cooks which is promising for the youngster, especially taking his lack of size into account.  Light on his feet and extremely elusive, Cooks can provide a great contribution to the team in the slot, along with Jeremy Kerley, and on some outside play.  He does struggle in blocking and has small hands, but his play making ability and lighting speed makes him a worthwhile roll of the dice for the Jets.

Round 3:
Dri Archer (RB - Kent St.)
Assuming Archer is still on the board the Jets must take a chance on this combine standout.  Archer performed like a stud on his combine day, running an astonishing 4.26 40-yard dash! Yes, you heard right, that was a 4.26!  It is true Archer cannot cary the load out of the backfield at the NFL level but he would be an excellent compliment out of the backfield to Chris Ivory's bruising style of running.  His long-term durability is his greatest concern, as his narrow thin frame does not do him any favors. With top-end speed, acceleration, and elusiveness Archer is a great gamble to take.  He will immediately help the team in the return game, and add some explosiveness and big-play ability to a team that has almost none.

Craig Loston (FS - LSU)
It's no secret the Jet's lack of safety play last season severely hurt their secondary.  An upgrade at safety is a must and Loston should be the guy the team takes.  Loston is a big man for a safety at 6'0" and 215 pounds.  He likes to assert his size on the field through his big hitting ability, mostly lining up in the box making him a perfect fit for coach Rex Ryan's blitz happy schemes.  What Loston lacks in coverage skills he makes up for with a great football IQ, a hard-working demeanor, and very coachable personality.  Also, one word to describe Loston is versatile.  The kid can line up at a variety of spots, although excelling inside the box as stated earlier.  If available drafting Lofton is a must, as he will provide the team with leadership and solid physical safety play in the secondary for years to come.

Current Cap Situation

For the first time in what seems to be forever, the Jets are finally not in salary cap purgatory heading into the offseason.  If played right, the Jets are poised to make a splash in free agency and the draft promising a wild offseason to come.  Expect GM John Idzik to build on his team through solid free agent acquisitions and strong selection in the draft.  Two free agents, tackle Austin Howard and kicker Nick Folk, are practically locks to be resigned, or at minimum one of them is at least worthy of the infamous franchise tag.  Coming off injury-plagued and unproductive seasons it is likely cornerback Antonio Cromartie and wide receiver Santonio Holmes will be cut, as well as embattled quarterback Mark Sanchez.  By cutting these 3 players alone the Jets will save approximately 25 million dollars in cap space, setting them up to sign one or two elite players that could potentially launch the Jets into the postseason.  Now let's break down the cap situation by position:

Offense:

Quarterback - It is no secret the Jets are being choked by Mark Sanchez's whopping 13.1 million dollar cap charge.  Expect the team to part ways with the famed "Sanchize" saving them a total of 8.3 million in cap space.  Also do not expect the team to resign Sanchez as a backup/insurance policy as it is time for both parties to head in a totally new direction.

Running Back - This is not a position of concern for the Jets heading into the offseason.  With Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory producing steady numbers at a low cap number the Jets are content, at least for now.  However Mike Goodson faces a strong possibility of being cut after trouble with the law and an injury that cost him the majority of the 2013 campaign.

Wide Receiver/Tight End - Even the casual Jet fan understands how important getting this position right this offseason will be for the future of the organization.  Santonio Holmes will no doubt be cut saving the Jets 8.25 million, but the money will most likely be immediately reinvested in a top free agent at the position (Jeremy Maclin or Eric Decker).  Look for the Jets to try and resign tight end Jeff Cumberland to a low-cap deal.  Instead of shelling out money via free agency for a mediocre tight end, GM John Idzik is more likely to go out and draft a tight end possibly in the first round (Jace Amaro of Texas Tech or Eric Ebron of UNC).

Offensive Line - The Jets already have a lot of resources tied up on the o line.  Left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold command a combined 18.9 million in cap space.  It is also paramount for the team to resign right tackle Austin Howard who will likely obtain a deal in the 4 to 6 million dollar cap range.  This being said the Jets will most likely try and find a low cost option at guard, possibly allowing free agent Willie Colon to walk.

Defense:

Defensive Line - There is no doubt the defensive line is the nucleus of the New York Jets.  Currently all of the d-linemen are young studs still playing on their rookie contracts or low-cap commanding deals.  This will soon one day blossom into a position of much concern for the Jets in finding a way to pay and keep all of these players, but for now they are fine.  Defensive end Muhammed Wilkerson could find himself receiving a major pay day this offseason.  The Jets would be smart to suck it up and come to a long-term contract extension with Wilkerson.  Coming off a dominating breakout season, it will be cheaper in the long run to resign Wilkerson now, not to mention it will definitely keep him happy.

Linebacker - Only three starters are currently under contract (David Harris, Demario Davis, and Quinton Coples).  Expect the Jets to try and resign veteran Calvin Pace, or a similar veteran through free agency.  Although unlikely it is possible the Jets could cut David Harris to save a total of 5 million in cap room, but leaving a gaping hole in a run defense that served as the backbone of the team.

Cornerback - It seems as though Antonio Cromartie will be a cap casualty this offseason unless he is willing to restructure his deal.  At 14.98 million the Jets will certainly part ways with Cromartie at that number if need be.  Coming off the worst season of his career it remains to be seen whether he will willingly restructure his deal with the green and white to a more fair and cap friendly deal.

Safety - This is a very intriguing position for the Jets heading into the offseason.  Safety Dawan Landry could possibly be cut to make room for an elite replacement, although the Jets would only be saving 1.5 million in space.  The Jets seem to shop low cost in the safety department under coach Rex Ryan but that could change this offseason as the Jets are at major need for a playmaker in the secondary.  Expect the Jets to try and sign a Jairus Bird (if the Bills are dumb enough to let him walk) or a T.J. Ward in free agency.

Special Teams:

The Jets will most likely use their franchise tag for the first time since the 2011 season this year. Following an excellent season, kicker Nick Folk will most likely obtain the franchise tag if a deal cannot be reached with the team.  This is the safest and most intelligent option for the Jets as the franchise tag on a kicker would only cost them a fraction of the money a long-term contract could cost for Folk.

Evaluating The 2013 Season

As we all know the 2013 season was one filled with many ups and downs for our beloved Jets.  Despite the team's struggle at times, there were many bright spots to take from this season besides massive amounts of frustration and countless moments of "getting our hopes up" (as ALL of us Jets fans are all too well acquainted with).  An overall finish of 8-8 with marquee wins over New England and New Orleans was a huge success for the Jets, especially considering many "experts" projected the Jets to finish the season as one of the worst teams in the league.  Here are my season grades for the team:

Offense:
Grade - C+
Don't get me wrong the grade could have been a lot lower here but I felt the need to be a little generous.  Considering how productive the running game was, finishing 6th overall in the NFL, with a rookie quarterback, who's inconsistency was obvious, really impressed me.  The offensive line did a solid job on the season in run blocking, with Chris Ivory clearly establishing himself as the "go to" back as the season progressed.  Ivory was able to earn hard fought yards with his bruising style of running which really impressed fans.  Perhaps even more impressive was for the first time in his career Ivory was able to stay healthy throughout an entire season while carrying the load in the Jets backfield.  The passing game is another story however.  Although quarterback Geno Smith showed much improvement in the final month of the season, he displayed more inconsistency and question marks then anything else being labeled as a "turnover machine" in his rookie campaign.  It remains to be seen if Smith can be an effective quarterback at the NFL level after throwing for 3,046 yards, 12 touchdowns, 21 interceptions, a completion rate of 55.8%, and an abysmal 66.5 QB rating leading the league's 31st ranked pass offense.  Yes, we all know Smith lacked weapons on offense with Santonio Holmes having another awful, unproductive injury plagued season and Jeremy Kerley being forced to be the team's number 1 option.  The passing games struggles can also be attributed to weak offensive line play in pass protection and an overall lack of connection between Smith and his receivers.  The offense also struggled mightily finishing off drives and turned the ball over often, finishing with a -14 turnover ratio ranking 2nd to last in the AFC.

Defense:
Grade - B
The defense was obviously the bright spot for the Jets this season finishing 11th overall in total yards allowed throughout the NFL.  I couldn't award the Jets a higher grade because of their lack of pass coverage.  The secondary was extremely inconsistent at best, owning the 22nd worst pass defense in the league.  Antonio Cromartie had one of the worst seasons of his career likely setting himself up to become a cap casualty in the upcoming offseason.  Dee Milliner, the Jets 9th overall selection in the draft, rebounded nicely from a rough start to his rookie season to be named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Month for the month of December.  His season's drastic turn around can be partially attributed to the Jets mid-season signing of Ed Reed and his veteran tutorage he offers to younger players.  The pass rush of the Jets was able to generate pressure pretty consistently with Muhammed Wilkerson and Calvin Pace both finishing the season with 10-plus sacks on the year.  However, the Jets' front seven really earned their keep in the running game.  With a defensive line anchored by Damon "Big Snacks" Harrison, breakout star Muhammed Wilkerson, and the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year Sheldon Richardson, the Jets completely shut down their opponents running attack finishing with the NFL's 3rd ranked rush defense.  This group of studs put the entire league on watch and will be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come.

Special Teams:
Grade - B
Nick "Folk-Hero" was the definition of clutch for the Jets this season missing only 3 field goals and hitting every game winner/tier he attempted.  Folk was the lone bright spot for the Jets in special teams this season as his punter counterpart, Ryan Quigley, struggled greatly all season long.  Quigley's net average was 38.9 yards per punt this season can be considered pedestrian at best.  Finally the return game was horrendous, rarely giving the Jets an advantage in field position and producing 0 touchdowns all season.

Coaching:
Grade - A-
I personally believe this was Rex Ryan's best coaching job yet.  Faced with a roster void of talent Ryan managed to put together an 8-8 season.  He coached up his defense to play at a high level and really did an incredible job with the front seven.  Perhaps his most impressive feat was getting his roster of 53 men to all buy into his system.  Despite being the laughing stock of the league preseason, Ryan got his team to believe they were winners, in turn his team greatly overachieved on the season.
